Food Commons is a local food network taking root on Kootenay Lake. Producers, growers, retailers, and eaters trade and share what they have, so more good food stays close to home and less of it goes to waste.
The idea
What a food commons is
A commons is something a community owns and tends together. A food commons applies that idea to how we grow and move food close to home, so the people who produce it and the people who eat it are part of the same local web.
Less good food wasted
Surplus that would have been composted or forgotten finds a table instead. Sharing and trading beat throwing away.
Value stays in the valley
Money and effort spent on local food circle back to local people, instead of leaving the community with every purchase.
How it works
List what you have. Find what you need. Trade or share.
A shared platform, GrowOperative, makes it simple to see what neighbours are growing and offering, and to arrange a trade, a sale, or a giveaway. You can settle up in cash, or on community credit, so you do not always need money in hand to take part.

A non-profit in the making
Owned by the community it feeds
We are forming the Kootenay Lake Food Commons Society, a British Columbia non-profit, so this belongs to the community rather than to any one person. Non-profit status also lets us bring in grants and local support to do more, faster.
